SUMMARY:October 27th\, 2024 - Scriptural Study Center - 4595 Wyandotte Dr\, Columbus\, OH 43230
DESCRIPTION:– Scriptural Study Center – 4595 Wyandotte Dr\, Columbus\, OH 43230 \nToday has been a day of taking stock of the current moment. This weekend I enjoyed hanging out by the community campfire with MAFA for some amazing open conversation. This morning I had the opportunity to spend time with the Scriptual Study church. They have a very unique style of worship. Their building makes one feel as if you have stepped into the backwoods rural communities of America. People from all over the region out of state said they moved into the Columbus area to be a part of this church community. I spoke with people from Illinois\, Wisconsin\, and Pennsylvania who now live in Ohio for this reason. An amazing testimonial to this church’s sense of spiritual communion.

SUMMARY:October 20th\, 2024 - Life Church at Easton - 5000 Sunbury Rd\, Columbus\, OH 43230
DESCRIPTION:Life Church at Easton – 5000 Sunbury Rd\, Columbus\, OH 43230 \nLovely morning with the Life Church at Easton this morning.  I met Hazel\, and Evelyn who welcomed me as a visitor today.  They provided a gift for new guests and I had the pleasure of learning about all of the various international charitable programs this church is involved in.  They also work on local feeding the homeless program. \nThe pastor’s sermon was amazing.  For the past 3 weeks I have attended a church it seems each one has been doing its communion services on the day I have visited.  This pastor began by explaining a bit of the history of the evolution of communion beginning in about 150 AD.  He really made me think and view it in a different light than I had previously ever thought about this sacred Christian ritual.  It’s very symbolic and he really brought it into something more than a ritual in his explanation of it. \nI have one more scheduled church visit coming up next week.  Then I will have to make a decision of which church family I may want to become a more permanent part of in the community of Ohio Statehouse 9.

SUMMARY:October 13th\, 2024 - Lamb of God Lutheran Church - 4925 Sunbury Rd\, Columbus\, OH 43230
DESCRIPTION:Lamb of God Lutheran Church – 4925 Sunbury Rd\, Columbus\, OH 43230 \nToday’s visit to the Lamb of God Lutheran Church was unique from other churches in the community I have attended.  When I arrived through the doors they led directly into the church’s sanctuary where they were holding a Sunday morning Bible study group.  David and those attending invited me in and provided me materials in order to join the Bible study group.  The group was friendly\, and spirited in their group discussion this morning.  The church services began promptly at 10:30am with a very traditional Lutheran style service.  There was much more ritual involved than when attending a contemporary service like the ones offered at the Morse Rd Lutheran church I had attended previously. \nTheir traditional service reminded me of the traditional Presbyterian services I used to attend growing up; although\, I felt the Lutheran traditional service was much more strict than a Presbyterian would be.  They were having a closed communion ritual this morning so I was unable to stay until the end since I was just visiting and not currently a member of that specific church.  In the previous week when I attended the Sharon Woods Church they were also having their communion\, but it was much more open and they invited anyone who was a follower of Jesus’s teachings to participate in that well-known Christian ritual.  In having previously studied church history I could really feel the evolution of the Christian faith between the old ways and the modern ways to worship.  One type of Christina church I find intimidating is the Catholic church; although\, in the past I have attended at least two Catholic services at two different Catholic churches in the past. \nUpon making my exit David politely escorted me out and invited me to sign the guest book.  He provided me a parting gift which was a jar of honey which I thought was really lovely.  The other church that actually also provided a gift to new visitors at the end of the service was the Sharon Woods church I visited last week.  Visiting the different churches in the community has been a blessing in disguise.  It really gives one an appreciation for the different viewpoints within the Christian chruch overall.

SUMMARY:October 6th\, 2024 - Sharon Woods Church - 5959 Sharon Woods Blvd\, Columbus\, OH 43229
DESCRIPTION:Sharon Woods Church – 5959 Sharon Woods Blvd\, Columbus\, OH 43229 \nThis past Sunday morning was amazing weather.  Sharon Woods Church is within walking distance of my home.  I always notice their farmer’s market and pantry signs out when I drive by this church.  I’ve always been intrigued and this was my moment to check it out.  Pastor Doug and some his congregation were outside the front door to greet everyone coming in.  I was invited into their fellowship hall for morning coffee and tea.  It was a pleasure to get to sit down and talk with some of the members old and new.  This church seems to be in a vibrant growing phase. \nI was told that they do a lot of charitable work within the direct local community which I found to be rather nice.  During Pastor Doug’s service he mentioned a children’s winter coat drive they were doing for December.  One of the other things I found out during this visit was that Sharon Woods Church was originally founded in 1963 and was first held inside Devonshire elementary school before moving to another building which had burned down.  They finally settled in the current building after the fire. \nThis church has a mixed congregation of natives and immigrants much like the congregation at a previous church I have visited earlier in my community church tour.  The immediate surrounding community does have a lot of older people and immigrant residents in the community.  It was nice to see a more localized membership in comparison to some of the other churches I have visited.  For those interested in attending this church their services begin at 11:00am on Sundays.

SUMMARY:September 29th 2024 - Grace Fellowship Church of Westerville - 3475 Paris Blvd\, Westerville\, OH 43081
DESCRIPTION:Grace Fellowship Church of Westerville – 3475 Paris Blvd\, Westerville\, OH 43081 \n  \nIt was a wonderful rainy morning at Grace Fellowship Church of Westerville this morning.  I was warmly greeted by Connie\, and friends who introduced me to John one of the members who knew quite a lot about the musical department within the church.  They have a lovely morning cafe that you can visit beginning around 9:30am prior to the 10:15am service.  I’m finding a lot of churches are doing this since many people lead busy lives and don’t have the time to have fellowship after services as in the past. \nThe sanctuary has a very traditional feel with two levels.  This church had\, at its height\, about 800 members I was told.  I sat with Doug and his wife\, Barbara\, who invited me to join them.  They introduced me to many other members which was nice to get to chat with many church members.  The service was more traditional with a scholarly feel which I personally enjoyed.  The Pastor\, I was told\, was originally from Russia.  There is actually quite a large Russian community that I have brushed shoulders with when I used to work at Columbus Dance Centre in Gahanna many years ago.  There was also a lovely soloist who sang a piece for the congregation during the service.  This church also still has a choir.  Many of the local churches seem to mostly have Christian rock bands rather than a church community choir. \nAfter the service I was introduced to Vickie who took me into the history and beginnings of this church.  It was built and opened up in 1967.  Since then the building has had many upgrades and additions.  I always love to hear the history of a church and the histories of its members and what brought them to a particular church.  Many of the people who are members of this church are from the local immediate community.  That seems to be a bit of a rarity.  A lot of churches bring people in from much further outside of their immediate community these days which I have found surprising. \nThis church is definitely on my list of churches to revisit at some point in the future.  Thank you so much for being so kind today here at this church. \n

SUMMARY:St Luke Lutheran Church - 4456 Morse Rd\, Columbus\, OH 43230
DESCRIPTION:St Luke Lutheran Church – 4456 Morse Rd\, Columbus\, OH 43230 \n  \nToday I really enjoyed spending time with Pastor Mike and Pastor Kris at St. Luke’s for their 10:00am contemporary service.  They do also have traditional Lutheran services offered at both 8:30am and 11:00am for those who prefer a more traditional approach to your worship.  To me that was the unique thing about this church.  It understands the transition between the two styles for older vs a younger membership.  Interestingly\, I recently discovered that “contemporary” worship styles are credited to Gen X.  This contemporary style is becoming much more popular among all churches I’ve noticed and seems to be the prominent style of the day that draws more membership. \nI was graciously given a tour of the church by Karen.  This church is active within both the local community and the international community with various outreach programs.  They also have a Tuesday Bible study at both 9:00am and 7:00pm for those who work during the day.  I noticed that this church has a much larger active youth group with an exception being the Vineyard.  It seems that gathering new young membership is really tough these days for churches around the district.  Not only that\, but Covid really has socially stifled many church memberships including this one.   Many of them offer online worship still even though Covid was more visible back in 2020-2021.  It seems the quicker a church decided to open its doors for in person worship the better it has survived and kept an in-tact membership.  The true purpose of church is in the fellowship a church can offer to its members and to its community.  That is why in person services and participation is so very important to keep churches alive.  They truly hold a very important role in local communities. \nThe other striking thing about this church was its church band had one of the most beautifully talented lead singers.  Her passion for music reached out through the services and the congregation.  Although the church also has a more traditional church choir for its more traditional membership services.  The more churches I visit the more difficult it will be to decide which congregation I fit best with.  Karen gave me a term for my church tour.  She said it was “church hopping.”  Many people do this when looking for a new church to become a part of when they have decided to get more involved with their communities and their walk with spirituality in the Christian version of their spiritual path.

SUMMARY:Maize Rd Baptist Church
DESCRIPTION:– 4251 Maize Rd\, Columbus\, OH 43224 \nSunday services begin at 10:45am. \n  \nAnother big thank you to Maize Baptist Church today for having me as a guest within their congregation today. Pastor Sean was super welcoming and it was a pleasure to meet church members like Margie\, Kathy\, and Deacan Keith. Great service. Pastor Sean has a wonderful sense of humor. He is definitely a former military guy. The most interesting point about this church is that it didn’t stay closed as long as others did during the Covid period. This boosted their membership in a positive way. It is a vibrant church community which houses at least 3 other ethnic churches including African\, and South American origins. \nHousing multiple church denominations seems to be a theme with many churches of the day as I continue my church tour.  Resources are scarce for everyone these days.  Coming together is what it is all about.  As some would say\, “that is what Jesus would do.”  This church also does have more youth involvement than some of the previous churches I have visited.  I think introducing young people to spiritualty and faith are important foundations to developing our youth into well-adjusted members of our society. \nThis church also has an array of community events and bible study for both men and women.

SUMMARY:Faith Covenant Church Visit
DESCRIPTION:Busy weekend this past weekend.  My Sunday visit with the congregation of Faith Covenant Church was delightful.  They currently have the largest active membership I’ve seen thus far.  The church has been around since the early 1980’s and has had multiple locations in its history.  However\, this church has been at it’s current location at 3607 Dempsey Rd\, Westerville\, OH 43081.  When I first walked in they were very welcoming.  I was offered a breakfast buffet of coffees\, teas\, and bagels as soon as I arrived.  Interestingly this church is currently going through a pastor transition so pastor Steve was standing in for the next several weeks until they can find a permanent pastor.  His message was about the importance of prayer in your life. \nThe building was lovely and this congregation also shared their building with another church that had services shortly after the 10:30am service that Faith Covenant has on Sundays.  One thing that I found delightful was that after the service the congregation had a fellowship style potluck.  It was an opportunity to sit down and get to know the members in that church community.  The common thing that each church has expressed is that covid has really scared away their members from coming back to regular services.  They are all also having difficulty growing with new members because of this.  I also found that finding a new pastor is also a challenge because in today’s world people are looking for money rather than community service in their lives.  It’s an interesting double-edged sword local communities are facing.
